Clostridium difficile culture

Methodology: Standard reference procedures for anaerobic bacterial culture and identification

Reported: Preliminary: Negative at 2 days or as soon as positive detected;
Final: Negative at 3 days

Specimen Requirements:

Collect: Stool

Transport: 1 g stool in a sterile container, frozen

Unacceptable Conditions: Nonsterile or leaking containers, dry specimen, stool in PVA or formalin, delayed transport of nonrefrigerated specimen, multiple specimens (more than one in 24 hours), formed stools, or rectal swabs.

Stability: Ambient: 2 hours; Refrigerated: 48 hours; Frozen: 1 week

Notes: Clostridium difficile Toxins (A&B) by EIA (0065146) can be tested for any isolates recovered by culture upon special request.
